21Shares Files for Spot Ondo Token ETF Investment Vehicle

March 27, 2026

21Shares has initiated the process of seeking regulatory approval from the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for a new investment product: the “21Shares Ondo Trust.” This trust intends to directly hold Ondo tokens, the native cryptocurrency of the Ondo Finance decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol, and track its performance through the Chicago Mercantile Exchange’s (CME CF) Ondo Finance-Dollar Reference Rate. The innovative approach signifies a growing interest in institutional-grade financial markets utilizing blockchain technology. Coinbase will provide the custodial services required for the safe storage and handling of these Ondo tokens, ensuring security and operational efficiency. The creation of this Trust represents a significant step toward making Ondo tokens accessible to a broader range of investors, particularly those seeking exposure to the rapidly evolving world of tokenized real-world assets (RWAs).

The proposed “21Shares Ondo Trust” is designed as a passive investment vehicle, explicitly avoiding speculative trading or leveraged strategies. This emphasis on a straightforward approach caters to investors prioritizing a stable and predictable investment experience. Authorized participants will have the flexibility to either create or redeem shares of the trust using cash transactions or in-kind exchanges, providing liquidity and operational versatility. This mechanism allows for adjustments in the share supply, facilitating a dynamic response to market conditions and investor demand. The trust’s structure is carefully crafted to align with regulatory requirements and investor expectations, emphasizing transparency and operational soundness.

The value of Ondo tokens has experienced considerable fluctuation recently, mirroring broader market trends within the DeFi sector. Currently priced at $1.12, the token’s valuation represents a substantial decrease – nearly 48% – from its all-time high of $2.14 recorded in December. Data from CoinGecko illustrates this downward trajectory, highlighting the inherent volatility associated with nascent cryptocurrency projects. Analyzing this price movement offers a critical perspective on the current conditions within the Ondo Finance ecosystem and the overall risks associated with investing in algorithmic stablecoins and decentralized finance protocols.

Notably, the Trump family’s DeFi platform, World Liberty Financial, has played a supportive role in the success of Ondo Finance. In December, World Liberty Financial executed a $250,000 purchase of ONDO tokens, accumulating a current holding of approximately 342,000 tokens valued around $383,000 – as reported by Nansen. However, this constitutes only a small portion, representing just 0.2%, of World Liberty Financial’s overall $208 million portfolio, which predominantly consists of stablecoins and wrapped Ether and Bitcoin. This diversified strategy underscores the platform’s risk management approach and its broader investment mandate.

Adding further context to this development is Ondo Finance’s recent acquisition of Oasis Pro, a SEC-registered broker-dealer, aimed at facilitating the launch of tokenized securities in partnership with Pantera Capital. Oasis Pro’s registration as an Alternative Trading System (ATS) and transfer agent qualifies it as a registered non-exchange trading venue and allows it to manage the ownership of securities. Established in 2020 and affiliated with the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), Oasis Pro offers a level of regulatory oversight and operational stability. This acquisition strategically positions Ondo Finance to capitalize on the growing trend of institutional-grade RWA tokenization.

Furthermore, the burgeoning interest in tokenized real-world assets is gaining significant traction. This year alone, the total value of RWA assets tokenized on-chain has surged by an impressive 58%, reaching nearly $25 billion, according to RWA.xyz. The majority of this value is currently concentrated on Ethereum, where private credit and US Treasurys are predominantly tokenized – accounting for 55% of the market share. The continued growth in RWA on-chain value speaks to the increasing recognition of blockchain technology’s potential to enhance traditional asset classes and unlock new investment opportunities. The overall trend is being closely monitored by the broader financial community, signifying an “arms race” for RWA tokenization – a key area of innovation within the DeFi space.
